The Defence Analysis and Growth Group (DRDO) has developed an indigenous Air Unbiased Propulsion (AIP) system for the Indian Navy’s Kalvari-class submarines. This AIP system will improve the submarines’ potential to remain underwater for prolonged intervals, considerably boosting their stealth capabilities.
The AIP system, developed by DRDO’s Naval Supplies Analysis Laboratory (NMRL), relies on gasoline cell expertise. It is going to be retrofitted onto the INS Kalvari submarine throughout its first main refit in September subsequent 12 months. The AIP system will allow the submarine to remain submerged for nearly two weeks.
The settlement for the combination of the indigenous AIP system was signed between DRDO and Naval Group France in January 2023. Naval Group France will certify the AIP design for integration into the Kalvari-class submarines. This collaboration between DRDO and Naval Group France is a part of the strategic bilateral cooperation between France and India within the area of underwater defence and deterrence.
The AIP system developed by DRDO is a big step in the direction of reaching the objective of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in defence expertise. It’s price noting that AIP expertise is presently possessed by only some nations, together with the US, France, China, the UK, and Russia.
The mixing of the indigenous AIP system onto the Kalvari-class submarines will improve the Indian Navy’s underwater capabilities, making the submarines extra silent and deadly. This growth is a part of Challenge-75, a collaboration between DRDO and Larsen & Toubro (L&T). L&T, as the first business companion, shall be answerable for the manufacture and integration of the AIP modules.
In conclusion, the indigenous AIP system developed by DRDO will considerably improve the underwater endurance and stealth capabilities of the Indian Navy’s Kalvari-class submarines. The AIP system, primarily based on gasoline cell expertise, shall be retrofitted onto the INS Kalvari submarine throughout its first main refit in September subsequent 12 months. This growth is a significant step in the direction of reaching self-reliance in defence expertise and strengthening India’s naval capabilities.
