South African influencers-for-hire target Ukraine’s president in influence campaign, researchers say

South African influencers-for-hire target Ukraine’s president in influence campaign, researchers say

South African influencers have reportedly been concerned in an internet affect marketing campaign focusing on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, researchers have discovered.

The marketing campaign, which criticized Zelensky’s rejection of a proposed ceasefire by Russia, seems to be half of a bigger, coordinated effort linked to an African influence-for-hire community.

A brand new evaluation from the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Analysis Lab (DFRLab) recognized over 40 accounts concerned within the site visitors manipulation marketing campaign, which garnered 290,000 views. Amongst these accounts, 29 recognized as influencers of their bios on X (previously Twitter), with 4 instantly linked to Lit, a South African influencer market identified for facilitating paid promotions.

The influencers focused Zelensky over his refusal to simply accept a three-day ceasefire proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin late final month. The ceasefire was set to coincide with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations however was finally dismissed by Zelensky, who referred to as for an extended, 30-day ceasefire format in step with U.S. strategies.

Following Zelensky’s rejection, pro-Russia voices, together with bloggers on Telegram and X, launched a wave of criticism. This on-line assault was amplified by South African influencers who promoted anti-Zelensky hashtags on X.

In accordance with DFRLab, this marketing campaign was not the primary of its variety. The influencers had beforehand engaged in comparable efforts, together with a March 2025 marketing campaign aimed toward disrupting Zelensky’s deliberate assembly with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Hashtags equivalent to #ZelenScam and #StopZelenScammingUS trended in South Africa throughout this era, portraying Zelensky as corrupt.

The rise of Russian affect throughout Africa, together with South Africa, has been accompanied by a rise in disinformation campaigns. In accordance with the Africa Middle for Strategic Research, disinformation efforts on the continent have surged almost fourfold since 2022, with Russia being the first sponsor behind almost 40 p.c of all such campaigns in Africa.

South Africa has been some of the standard targets for Russian disinformation. Along with pushing narratives supposed to polarize communities, fan mistrust, and bolster the African Nationwide Congress, Russia has used influential South Africans to advertise pro-Russian narratives inside South Africa and overseas, researchers stated.

It’s common for Russia to make use of social media to unfold disinformation overseas. DFRLab final yr recognized a community of malicious accounts focusing on American customers on social media platform X to discredit protests in Georgia sparked by an unpopular Russian-style regulation that threatens the independence of native media. This marketing campaign was doubtless orchestrated by the Russia-linked malign community Doppelgänger, identified for spreading disinformation within the U.S. and Europe.
