Man charged with having gun, impersonating police near Loop protest

A 21-year-old Matteson man is charged with impersonating a police officer and illegally possessing a firearm close to a protest within the Loop on Thursday night, Chicago police stated. Willie Mathews Jr., was arrested round 5:10 p.m. within the 200 block of South Michigan Avenue.

Police reported that Mathews was noticed unlawfully carrying police identifiers and, upon taking him into custody, officers recovered a firearm from him.

It was unclear if Mathews was within the Loop for the protest or if he simply occurred to be within the space, which was saturated with actual law enforcement officials assigned to deal with the protest.
