Indian Army Achieves 88% Self-Reliance In Ammunition Production

Indian Army Achieves 88% Self-Reliance In Ammunition Production

In a big stride in the direction of self-reliance in defence manufacturing, the Indian Military has introduced that it has achieved 88% “Atmanirbharta” or self-sufficiency in ammunition manufacturing. This milestone displays India’s dedication to lowering its dependency on international suppliers and enhancing its strategic autonomy in army capabilities.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has been actively pushing for indigenization, with the Indian Military now domestically producing 154 out of the 175 kinds of ammunition required for its operations. This transfer not solely cuts down on import prices but in addition positions India as a possible exporter within the international ammunition market.

The achievement is a part of a long-term roadmap to make sure the Military’s operational preparedness for any extended battle situation. “The main focus has been on lowering our import dependency, which has been considerably achieved by means of the corporatization of Ordnance Factories and the involvement of personal sector corporations,” mentioned a senior MoD official.

The Defence Analysis and Growth Organisation (DRDO) and Munitions India Ltd (MIL) have been pivotal on this initiative, with the latter establishing services to fabricate these superior munitions.

“By attaining this stage of self-reliance, we’re not solely saving on international trade but in addition guaranteeing that our forces are outfitted with ammunition tailor-made to our particular wants, which are sometimes more cost effective than imported alternate options,” the official added.

This improvement comes at a time when international conflicts have highlighted the significance of a strong home manufacturing functionality. The Indian Military’s push for self-reliance is a part of a broader nationwide agenda underneath the ‘Make in India’ coverage, which seeks to strengthen the home defence trade, create jobs, and foster innovation.

The Military’s success in ammunition self-reliance is anticipated to have a ripple impact, encouraging additional funding in indigenous defence manufacturing and probably opening up export markets.
