Hochul’s support for DAs’ law reform: Letters to the Editor — Feb. 4, 2025

Hochul’s support for DAs’ law reform: Letters to the Editor — Feb. 4, 2025

The Concern: Gov. Hochul and Alvin Bragg demanding fixes to New York legal guidelines hobbling prosecutors.

It’s totally ridiculous to see Manhattan District Legal professional Alvin Bragg and Gov. Hochul standing wholeheartedly behind a push to cease letting criminals unfastened (“Kat backs plea to cease letting criminals unfastened,” Feb. 1).

It’s past clear that these two are merely enjoying to the brand new political local weather.

Glenn Ramanauskas

Staten Island

The Legislature, Metropolis Council, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and others share a variety of the blame for crime in New York.

However all of us keep in mind Bragg’s “Day One” order refusing to prosecute many crimes.

In contrast, the complete system in New York Metropolis was very diligent in inventing felonies to pursue President Trump.

What they’re doing now could be just like the proverbial “rats abandoning a sinking ship.” The nationwide tradition is altering. Gentle-on-crime insurance policies have gotten political poison.

That’s why Bragg and Hochul are all of a sudden noticing the issue.

Joseph Grassi

Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Are you severe with a headline about letting criminals go free in New York? Your paper didn’t complain about President Trump basically escaping accountability after being convicted by a jury of his friends.

Raymond Mangano

Brooklyn

After studying the statistic that 62% of circumstances are dismissed in New York, I used to be reminded of a dictum attributed to Martin Luther through the Reformation: “Sin valiantly however imagine extra valiantly.”

The non secular reformer wasn’t encouraging extra sinfulness. But when it continued to happen, the results wouldn’t be severe, as you may depend upon God’s forgiveness.

Equally, New York’s justice system appears to be extraordinarily forgiving. With there being no punitive penalties in these circumstances, there’s no incentive to change dangerous conduct.

Frank Brady

Yonkers

Why now, Hochul? Did somewhat birdie inform you New Yorkers are fed up with the leftist nonsense of freedom for criminals?

Or is it as a result of within the subsequent election cycle you’re going to be ousted on your incompetence?

Kevin Decide

Naples, Fla.

The Concern: Cardinal Dolan’s name for President Trump and Congress to cross school-choice laws.

I discover it hypocritical that Cardinal Dolan is supporting college alternative when he continues to shut Catholic colleges (“Children deserve likelihood to rise,” Feb. 1).

My daughter taught in a Catholic college for 11 years. The college had full enrollment, the lecturers had all signed contracts for 2020 and Cardinal Dolan closed her college.

How dare he promote college alternative when his first motion to boost cash is to shut Catholic colleges! Catholic colleges can’t get good lecturers to work, as there is no such thing as a assure you’ll have a job subsequent 12 months.

Cardinal Dolan is right that “children deserve an opportunity to rise.” Sadly, they could not get that likelihood from him.

Patty Pogeweit

Pearl River

I wholeheartedly agree and help Cardinal Dolan in calling for laws to offer American dad and mom instructional alternatives by way of school-choice funding.

One query, although: What Catholic colleges will nonetheless be open when the laws passes? He’s been closing them at breakneck pace.

Christopher O’Keefe

Manhattan

It’s a crime that Catholic Charities through the diocese of New York can present funds to abet the inflow of immigrants, however not for Catholic colleges to remain open. Cardinal Dolan ought to be ashamed.

Raymond Robertson

Ocean Township, NJ
