France, Italy, and Spain condemn Israel attacks on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon


The leaders of France, Italy, and Spain launched a joint assertion on Friday condemning the Israeli Protection Forces (IDF) for its “unjustifiable” assaults on United Nations peacekeepers stationed in southern Lebanon earlier that day.

The international locations’ leaders said, “These assaults represent [a] severe violation of the obligations of Israel underneath UNSCR 1701 and underneath humanitarian worldwide legislation.” The leaders added, “These assaults are unjustifiable and shall instantly come to an finish.”

UNSCR 1701, a decision by the UN Safety Council that was unanimously adopted in 2006, referred to as for a full cessation of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel and established a buffer zone in southern Lebanon. The joint assertion on Friday demanded speedy adherence to the phrases of UNSCR 1701 by all events concerned, emphasizing that peacekeepers should be protected.

Two peacekeepers have been wounded on Friday morning when an Israeli tank opened fireplace on their statement tower. This marked the second such incident in simply 48 hours, as explosions had rocked the peacekeepers’ major base in Naqoura earlier this week. The peacekeepers are a part of the United Nations Interim Power in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and serve within the area underneath a UN mandate to observe the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. France, Italy, and Spain are among the many largest European contributors to the UNIFIL mission.

Eire’s Taoiseach Simon Harris additionally criticized the assaults, stating that “Israel should take heed to the voice and the considerations of the worldwide group.” UN Peacekeeping Beneath-Secretary-Normal for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix additional emphasised the gravity of the state of affairs, warning that peacekeepers and civilians in Lebanon are at “severe threat.” He urged all events to respect and assure the security of personnel.

The 2 incidents occurred amid the continued clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah. Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, a Lebanese Islamist militant group, have sharply escalated since October 2023. The hostilities are linked to the broader battle between Israel and Palestinian teams, with Hezbollah expressing solidarity with Gaza. Each side have engaged in frequent exchanges of fireside alongside the Israel-Lebanon border, inflicting widespread displacement and elevating humanitarian considerations.
