Exposing 'Anom” – Inside The FBI’s Secret Encrypted Phone Company

Joseph Cox, creator of the 2024 ebook “Darkish Wire: The Unbelievable True Story of the Largest Sting Operation Ever“, got here on the Cybercrime Journal Podcast to share the within story of the biggest law-enforcement sting operation ever, during which the FBI made its personal tech start-up to wiretap the world.

In 2018, a robust app for safe communications known as Anom took root amongst organized criminals. They believed Anom allowed them to conduct enterprise within the shadows. Apart from one factor: it was secretly run by the FBI.

Backdoor entry to Anom and a sequence of associated investigations granted American, Australian, and European authorities a front-row seat to the underworld. Tens of 1000’s of criminals worldwide appeared in full view of the identical brokers they had been attempting to evade. Worldwide smugglers. Cash launderers. Hitmen. A sprawling world economic system as environment friendly and interconnected because the authorized one. Officers watched drug shipments and homicide plots unfold, making arrests with out blowing their cowl.

However, because the FBI began to lose management of Anom, did the company go too far? Cox tells Cybercrime Journal Podcast host and Editor-at-Massive David Braue the riveting story.
