While serving a 241-year jail sentence for armed robberies he participated in at age 16, Bobby Bostic signed up for gardening obligation. His purpose was easy: extra time outdoors of his Missouri jail cell. As an alternative, the author and instructor discovered solace within the soil.
“Weeding the backyard turned a type of remedy,” wrote Bostic, who was ultimately launched on parole at 43. “With each weed that I pulled out of the bottom, I felt like I used to be pulling out part of my prison self.”
