NATO to boost Baltic presence, send warships to guard undersea cables


MILAN — After NATO introduced final month that it will beef up its naval presence within the Baltic Sea, Finnish media reported that the navy alliance is predicted to deploy as much as 10 warships to guard undersea cables within the space towards potential sabotage.

Allies held an emergency assembly on Dec. 30 at NATO’s headquarters to evaluate potential methods to reinforce the safety of vital underwater infrastructure following the suspected deliberate injury of the Estlink 2 submarine cable between Finland and Estonia.

“In an effort to keep vigilance, enhance situational consciousness and deter future incidents, NATO is enhancing its navy presence within the Baltic Sea,” an announcement issued by the group stated.
