Sixteen Kansas counties have three or fewer attorneys, together with Hodgeman County and Wichita County—which don’t have any lively legal professionals, in accordance with the press launch and the report. The issue is more likely to worsen as a result of the lawyer inhabitants in Kansas, particularly rural Kansas, is older than nationwide averages and nearer to retirement.

Attorneys in practically one out of three counties have a median age of older than 60 years previous. If these attorneys aren’t counted, 87 counties would have one or fewer attorneys per 1,000 individuals, and 9 counties would don’t have any attorneys.

The report has 10 suggestions, together with that the Kansas Supreme Court docket ought to work with lawmakers and others to:

  • Create a rural-attorney coaching program on the state’s two legislation faculties. Tuition-reimbursement incentives to encourage rural observe ought to be a part of this system.

  • Set up a pupil mortgage compensation program for legal professionals working and training within the state’s rural areas.

  • Develop an expert group for rural attorneys to collaborate on points referring to recruitment and retention.
