Army's To Procure 100 More K-9 Vajra Self-Propelled Howitzers


The Indian Military is making ready to submit a proposal to the Cupboard Committee on Safety (CCS) for the procurement of an extra 100 Okay-9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers. This transfer comes as a part of the Military’s ongoing efforts to reinforce its artillery capabilities, notably in mild of regional safety challenges alongside the borders with China and Pakistan. The Okay-9 Vajra, which is a variant of the South Korean K9 Thunder, has already confirmed efficient in varied operational environments, together with excessive climate situations.

The proposal seeks approval for 100 items of the Okay-9 Vajra, that are 155 mm, 52-calibre tracked artillery programs. Every unit weighs roughly 50 tonnes and has a firing vary exceeding 40 kilometers.

These howitzers are manufactured by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in India, using know-how transferred from Hanwha Defence of South Korea. The manufacturing course of emphasizes native elements, aligning with India’s defence coverage geared toward self-reliance, often known as “Atmanirbharta” .

The Okay-9 Vajra weapons have been deployed strategically alongside delicate borders, particularly throughout heightened tensions in areas like Ladakh. Their deployment has been bolstered by further tools reminiscent of winterization kits to make sure performance in chilly climates.

The procurement course of was initiated earlier this month with a Request for Proposal (RFP) issued to L&T. Following their response, contract negotiations will begin. The CCS is anticipated to assessment and doubtlessly approve this proposal quickly, though delays could happen as a result of upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The acquisition of those further howitzers is seen as essential for enhancing the Indian Military’s long-range firepower capabilities. The Okay-9 Vajra has already demonstrated its effectiveness in each desert and mountainous terrains, making it a flexible asset for the Military’s artillery items. This procurement aligns with broader efforts to modernize India’s defence forces and guarantee preparedness in opposition to evolving safety threats within the area.

The Indian Military’s proposal for extra Okay-9 Vajra howitzers displays a strategic initiative to bolster its artillery capabilities amidst regional tensions, emphasizing each technological development and native manufacturing.
