European Commission downplays ShinyHunters cyberattack impact



The European Fee on Monday sought to minimize the impression of a cyberattack on elements of its public net infrastructure, saying there was no proof its inner programs had been compromised.

In a press release issued Friday, the Fee stated it had detected an incident affecting the Europa.eu net portal, the European Union’s central on-line platform internet hosting web sites and providers for its establishments.

The hacking group often known as ShinyHunters has claimed duty, alleging it stole greater than 350 gigabytes of knowledge, together with databases, emails and inner paperwork, and has printed samples on its darkish net leak website.

Talking to reporters on Monday, Fee spokesperson Thomas Regnier confirmed some components of the claims, together with that elements of the Europa platform are hosted on cloud infrastructure offered by Amazon, however sought to attenuate the importance of the breach.

Regnier stated the Fee’s protection programs “instantly detected the malicious actions” and contained the incident, including that “danger mitigation measures have been carried out by our providers to guard our providers and information with out disrupting the provision of our European web sites.”

He confused that the affected domains have been restricted to Europa.eu public web sites and that the Fee’s “inner infrastructure has completely not been affected.”

“We’re speaking about information that’s doubtlessly already within the public area,” Regnier stated.

The Fee didn’t specify what information could have been accessed or what number of customers may very well be affected, and declined to touch upon whether or not private information was concerned.

Regnier declined to supply additional particulars, citing the continued investigation. The Fee stated it’s working with cybersecurity consultants and related authorities to evaluate the scope of the breach and notify any affected events.

ShinyHunters is a widely known cybercrime group that has claimed a number of breaches lately, typically allegedly utilizing historic datasets in its extortion makes an attempt. Members of the group have been beforehand accused of launching hacking campaigns towards varied industries final summer season earlier than a spate of arrests slowed them down.
