Columbia University says hacker stole SSNs and other data of nearly 900,000



A cyberattack in June on Columbia College allowed hackers to entry the delicate private data of greater than 860,000 folks.

The incident was found on June 24 when the college had a tech outage that disrupted vital elements of its IT programs. 

An investigation found that the hackers breached programs on Could 16 and have been in a position to siphon knowledge from the college. No affected person data have been taken from Columbia College Irving Medical Heart, in line with the breach letters. 

The college is providing these affected two years of free credit score monitoring companies. 

The incident prompted widespread points for Columbia college students, who couldn’t entry e-mail accounts and platforms for assignments. Some took to social media to share pictures of digital indicators on campus that have been taken over and defaced with pictures of President Donald Trump. 

Two weeks after the hack, Columbia stated a hacktivist with a “political agenda” broke into the college’s IT programs and stole “focused” scholar knowledge.

“Our investigation has indicated the hackers are extremely subtle and have been very focused of their theft of paperwork,” the college official stated on July 2. “They broke in and stole scholar knowledge with the obvious objective of furthering their political agenda.”

The hacker — who additionally has allegedly breached programs at New York College and the College of Minnesota — has claimed the assaults are in response to the Supreme Court docket resolution in 2023 placing down affirmative motion and stated his objective is to show that colleges should not abiding by the ruling by persevering with to confess any Black and Latino college students.

After the Columbia incident, the hacker reportedly offered tranches of the info to Bloomberg Information and The New York Instances — each of which ran controversial tales based mostly on the stolen data.
