New 104% China Tariff – U.S.-China Standoff Intensifies | Customs & International Trade Law Blog


On April 8, 2025, President Trump issued an government order imposing extra tariffs on Chinese language imports after China did not drop its retaliatory tariffs on U.S. items. The order amends the Administration’s unique reciprocal tariff of 34%, rising it to 84%. This is applicable on high of the 20% tariff imposed in March, bringing the whole tariff on all imports from China to 104%, efficient April 9, 2025.

China has already applied countermeasures in response. China’s Workplace of the Tariff Fee of the State Council introduced that tariffs on U.S. items will rise to 84% beginning on April 10.

International Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian known as the Administration’s actions “bullying” stated Beijing will take “agency and forceful” steps to guard itself. The Commerce Ministry stated it might “combat until the top” within the occasion of a commerce warfare.

President Trump acknowledged that the imposition of the tariffs has been “considerably explosive” however defended the method, saying that the Administration is open to creating offers.
